Flashing, Reading & Common Issues (AutoCal / FlashScan · Cummins & Duramax)
How to use this document: Each entry below is a self-contained question and answer. Find the customer's task or error code, then read what it means and the fix. Covers EFILive AutoCal / FlashScan on RAM Cummins and GM Duramax.
Most important rule: These ECMs are very sensitive to voltage — always flash with a battery charger connected. If a truck won't start or a dash message won't clear after tuning, contact your tuner.
Note: Cummins ECMs cannot be read with EFILive, and EFILive does not support Ford Powerstroke (see below).
Before You Start — Setup
Which Vehicles Does EFILive Support?
EFILive AutoCal / FlashScan supports these diesel platforms:
- 2007.5–2024 RAM 6.7L Cummins (Pickup and Cab & Chassis)
- 2001–2016 GMC/Chevrolet 6.6L Duramax (Pickup and Cab & Chassis)
- 2014–2019 GMC/Chevrolet 2.8L Duramax
- 2014–2019 Chevrolet Cruze 2.0L Duramax
- 2018–2019 GMC/Chevrolet Terrain/Equinox 1.6L Duramax
Does EFILive Work for a Ford Powerstroke?
Short answer: No. EFILive does not support Ford Powerstroke.
EFILive AutoCal / FlashScan tuning is limited to GM Duramax and RAM Cummins diesel platforms (the supported list above). Ford Powerstroke trucks use different ECM/PCM hardware, communication protocols, and factory security than EFILive is built for, so you cannot read, flash, license, or data-log a Powerstroke with an EFILive AutoCal or FlashScan device — the device simply won't be able to communicate with the truck. If a customer has a Ford Powerstroke, EFILive is not the right tool; they'll need a tuning platform that supports Ford (for example, HP Tuners). Do not attempt to flash an EFILive Duramax/Cummins file onto a Powerstroke.
What Software and Firmware Do I Need?
- Install the latest EFILive V8 Scan & Tune and EFILive Explorer at the same time. (Latest stable release: V8.4.90.)
- Check device firmware: open the EFILive Control Panel (top-right), then F6: Firmware. Update if prompted.
- Outdated firmware causes Error $0502 when flashing — update firmware first.
- If you are having any weird software issues, windows not opening or freezing, please restart your PC and try again. If the issue persists uninstall and reinstall the program.
How Do Licensing and VIN Slots Work?
- Every flash uses a VIN license slot. If none are available, you'll get Error $0533 — “No VIN license slots available.”
- To add VIN slots: F7: Licenses > F3: VINs > Generate Auth Code. Use the Auth Code to order your VIN license(s), then apply the activation codes you receive via F7: Licenses > F5: Convert > Paste > Convert.
- This requires AutoCal firmware V3.00.028 or later.
How Do I Get My OBD Details for Support?
- Plug the device and laptop into the OBD2 port and turn the key to RUN.
- Select F4: OBD > F2: OBD > Auto Detect > Read.
- When the info fills in, screenshot it and email it to your tuner with your order number.
Flashing & Reading — Golden Rules
Read these before any flash. They prevent the most common failures.
- Always connect a battery charger (set to about 10A) before flashing — even with brand-new, fully charged batteries. New ECMs are voltage-sensitive and the flash can fail if voltage drops.
- 2018+ Cummins: connect a Bypass Cable before flashing.
- Key ON, engine not cranked. Doors closed, all accessories off. Plug the AutoCal in with the supplied cable — it powers on.
- LML Duramax (2011–2016): you must full-flash the STOCK file first, then re-flash and select Program Calibration / Cal-Flash for your tune file. TCM tuning is full-flashed separately.
- Cummins and LML Duramax (2011–2016) ECMs are not readable with EFILive — no stock read is taken for these (the LML uses a provided stock file).
Flashing & Reading — Procedures
BBX Flashing (Preloaded AutoCal)
If your device came preloaded: Skip straight to flashing at the truck.
To load a BBX onto the device: Double-click the BBX file. EFILive Quick Setup Manager opens. Choose Program Quick Setup, confirm Yes to overwrite, and the tune and settings load onto the device.
At the truck:
- Key ON (no crank) and plug in the AutoCal.
- Remove any OBD SOTF Switches and OBD Splitter cables and plug directly into the OBD2 port.
- On the device, go to Tune Tool > F1: Tuning > F3: Program Full, then select the file.
- Select the checkmark to activate your VIN license if you haven't already.
CTZ Passthrough Flashing (Laptop)
Before you start: Battery charger on; 2018+ Cummins bypass cable connected; key ON, no crank.
- Export the CTZ: double-click the BBX file to open Quick Setup Manager, right-click the tune file(s), choose Export Tune File(s)…, and save the CTZ file.
- Remove any OBD SOTF Switches and OBD Splitter cables and plug directly into the OBD2 port.
- Flash: double-click the CTZ file. EFILive Tune Tool opens. Choose F7: Full Flash.
- LML (2011–2016): stock full-flash first, then Cal-Flash your tune file.
- Activate the license if you haven't (if no licenses remain, see the VIN slots entry).
- Click Full Flash (takes 10–15 minutes). When prompted, turn the ignition OFF and click OK to begin the countdown. When done, unplug and start the truck.
Stock Read (Duramax — Only When Requested)
Note: Only take a stock read when we request one for your order. Cummins controllers are not readable with EFILive.
- Make sure the latest Scan & Tune and Explorer are installed and firmware is checked (F6).
- On the main screen select F3: Tune. The Tune Tool opens to the read section.
- Plug the device and laptop into OBD2, key ON (no crank).
- Auto Detect (or right-click to manually pick the controller for your year), then Read.
- Save the .ctz file and email it to your tuner with your order number.
2.8L Duramax trans tuning: Send a separate stock read of the T43 TCM (select the T43 controller).
LB7 / LLY / LBZ: Pull These Fuses to Flash
If an LB7, LLY, or some LBZ truck fails to flash/write: Remove these fuses first, then re-attempt the flash: TBC IGN, TBC BATT, INFO, RADIO, RADIO AMP.
- Some LB7 trucks also need SEO 1 and SEO 2 removed.
Aftermarket remote starter (some 2001–2007 Duramax): If you still get “No Data Received” after pulling the fuses, check behind the OBD port for a purple CAN wire — it's often tapped for remote starters. If so, cut the remote-starter side of the wire, flash the truck, then reconnect the wire afterward. Extra noise on the CAN wire can cause the flash to fail.
- Reinstall the fuses once the flash completes. (Related to Error $0101 and Error $0537.)
Reset File Procedure (Dash Messages)
If a dash message appears after the tune is installed, contact your tuner for a RESET FILE (and, if provided, an updated/V2 tune file).
Read ALL DTC codes first. Do not attempt any reset while there are active codes — they must be fixed first. A reset will not hold with an active fault present.
LWN Duramax (2.8L) Reset Procedure
- Flash the reset file in and let the truck idle. This may take 10–15 minutes. The truck may idle up and down a bit and the message will clear; let it keep running until it shuts off on its own.
- Turn the key OFF.
- In the passenger footwell fuse panel, remove fuses F09 and F28.
- Key the truck ON — the dash will be off.
- Unplug the SCR module (located under the spare tire).
- Flash your modified ECM file back in, wait for it to finish, then key the truck OFF.
- Reinstall fuses F09 and F28 and start the vehicle — the message should now be gone.
- If the message persists, scan the DTC codes and make sure there are no pending or active codes. Permanent codes are okay — they clear with drive cycles.
- If there are still issues, run the reset procedure again.
L5P / LM2 / LZ0 / Cruze / Terrain / Equinox: Emissions Message Stuck on After Tuning
- Scan the codes and fix any active DTCs.
- L5P / LM2 fuel gauge not working with the emissions message present: check your CAN bus plugs and fix the issue.
- Flash the reset file (or V2 file) and confirm the message clears on the next key cycle.
- Flash the original (modified) file back in afterward.
Data Logging
How Do I Record a Data Log for My Tuner?
- Install EFILive Scan & Tune on a Windows laptop. Connect the AutoCal/FlashScan to the OBDII port and the laptop.
- Select F2: Scan (top left). The EFILive Scan Tool window opens.
- Select the controller for your truck/year.
- Select PIDs (the parameters recorded): download the .dsh file for your controller from the EFILive website, then in the Scan Tool click Open Dash and choose your .dsh file. Correct PIDs matter - DSH files are attached at the bottom.
- Record: select F3: Data and use the start / stop / pause buttons at the bottom. Keep logs to 20–30 seconds.
- Save the log to your desktop and email it to your tuner with your order number.
WOT log: Begin from a stop, work up to as high a gear as you comfortably can for 5–10 seconds, then stop.
5-position switch diagnosis: Start in Level 1, slowly move the dial through all positions, then stop at the top level.
Error Codes & Common Issues
Look up the error code the device reports below. Codes are listed in numeric order.
Error $0101 — “No Data Received”
Fix: Ensure the AutoCal is connected to the computer. This is likely a cord issue or a USB port issue.
Error $0281 — “No Data Received”
What it means: The FlashScan or AutoCal did not receive valid data from the connected vehicle.
Fix: Check all cables and connections. Make sure the ignition is turned on to the RUN position. This can also happen if there's an ECM issue and the AutoCal cannot see the ECM because it is faulty after a failed flash or otherwise. You can also get this error on an 18+ Cummins without the bypass cable installed. If the bypass cable is installed, try swapping the yellow and brown leads on the cable.
Error $0331 — “Request Out of Range”
What it means: The controller does not support the requested OBD mode's sub-function's parameter. We've seen this on CMF (19–21 Cummins).
Fix: If the problem persists, turn the key on, remove fuses 49 and 51 under the hood, and begin the flash. Once completed, return the fuses.
Error $0333 — “Security Access Denied”
What it means: The controller has either not been successfully unlocked or has re-armed itself before the FlashScan or AutoCal made a secure request. Also, Dodge Cummins 2018+ vehicles are fitted with a CAN Security Gateway Module (SGM) that must be bypassed to communicate with EFILive.
Fix: When using V8 pass-thru reading and/or flashing, try selecting “Assume Lock may be Faulty” and “Try Alt Keys,” then retry the operation. Ensure the bypass cable is installed; you can also try swapping the pins on the back of the OBD connector from the bypass cable and trying again.
Error $0340 — “Download Not Accepted - Primary”
What it means: Happens on Cummins controllers during a flash.
Fix:
- If passthrough flashing on Fast or Unlimited flash speed, switch back to Standard and try again.
- If flashing an 18+ Cummins, verify the OBD SGW bypass cable is installed.
- If it still errors, request a stock file from your tuner, flash that in first, then flash the modified file.
Error $0502 — “Script File Not Found”
What it means: The script (*.obj) file does not exist on the device.
Fix: Ensure you have selected/programmed the correct controller type(s) in the BBX configuration. Re-install (or repair-install) the EFILive V8 software, then reprogram the BBX configuration to your FlashScan or AutoCal via F5: BBx > Program.
Error $0503 — “Script File Not Valid”
What it means: The script (*.obj) file is corrupt.
Fix: Re-install (or repair-install) the EFILive V8 software, then click Check Firmware in the main V8 Scan and Tune window and perform any available updates.
Error $0531 — “Serial Number Security Restriction Does Not Match Controller's Serial Number”
What it means: The tune file author restricted which controller the *.ctz file can be flashed into by specifying the controller's serial number in the file's security settings.
Fix: Contact the author of the tune file to obtain a file that can be flashed into the target controller. The most common cause is a Cummins controller where the ECM serial number (from the ECM tag) was provided or written down incorrectly.
Error $0532 — “Controller Not Licensed”
What it means: An attempt was made to program a controller before it was licensed.
Fix: Activate the VIN license before attempting to program it. You can license a controller using the on-screen prompts via FlashScan or AutoCal.
Error $0533 — “No VIN License Slots Available”
What it means: An attempt was made to license a controller when no free VIN license slots were available.
Fix: Additional VIN license slots can be purchased for FlashScan devices from EFILive's online web store (www.efilive.com). FlashScan and AutoCal V2 devices may support up to 221 VIN license slots; V3 devices may support up to 600. Some AutoCal devices may be configured by the supplier with a smaller maximum VIN license limit. Ensure you have activated the VIN license via the code you were sent from DDC.
Error $0535 — “AutoCal Is Not Yet Linked to a FlashScan” (See Also $010D)
What it means: An attempt was made to program a controller using an AutoCal device that has not yet been linked to its parent FlashScan device.
Fix: Contact DDC for link codes if this issue arises.
Error $0536 — “Tune File Is Not Registered to This AutoCal Device”
What it means: An attempt was made to program a controller with a tune file that is not linked to this AutoCal device.
Fix: Ensure the AutoCal serial number you provided is correct, and contact DDC if it persists.
Error $0537 — “Controller Is Locked with a Custom Key”
What it means: An attempt was made to read or program a controller that cannot be unlocked using the standard GM keys.
Fix: If you know the key that was used to lock the controller, use the unlock option in the EFILive software to unlock it before attempting to read or reflash again. Also make sure nothing is tapped into any of the OBD wires for power (aftermarket alarms, remote starters, radios, etc.).
Error $053C — “Tune File Does Not Allow Calibration Flashing”
What it means: The tune file author flagged the file to prevent calibration flashing. The file may only be full-flashed.
Error $053E — “VIN Security Restriction Does Not Match Controller's VIN”
What it means: The tune file author restricted which controllers the *.ctz file can be flashed into by specifying a VIN pattern in the file's security settings.
Fix: Ensure the VIN provided is correct. Sometimes the ECM may have been replaced and may have a different VIN programmed than what's on the door of the truck. To check, read the OBD details and confirm the VIN with DDC.
Error $0548 — “Flash Checksum Failed”
What it means: The data programmed into the controller has been corrupted.
Fix: Retry the flash procedure. If the problem persists, contact EFILive support.
Error $0549 — “Ignition Is Switched Off”
Fix: Ensure the ignition key is on. This is most likely on 18+ Cummins trucks — ensure the bypass cable is installed. If the problem persists, try swapping the wires on the back of the OBD connector and try again.
Flash Failed / Voltage Drop
What it means: New ECMs are very voltage-sensitive; the flash fails if voltage dips.
Fix: Connect a 10A battery charger (even with charged batteries); on 2018+ Cummins use the Bypass Cable; then retry.
Flashed but No Crank / Total Loss of ECM Comms
Symptoms: The flash “succeeds” but the truck won't crank, there's a total loss of ECM communication, or the scanner/software can no longer connect.
Cause: An interrupted flash (voltage) or a bad file.
Emissions-off (delete) tunes: All emissions-off vehicles MUST have the throttle valve and EGR valve disconnected unless stated otherwise.
Fix: Re-flash the stock file first to recover and confirm the battery/charger is connected. If there's still no comms, retry with guaranteed power. If the tuning program cannot recover with the stock file, the OEM tool may be needed for factory programming.
Cummins ECM Won't Read
Cause: Expected — Cummins ECMs are not readable with EFILive.
Fix: No stock read is needed for Cummins; proceed per your file/flash instructions.
Most flash failures on these ECMs are voltage or connection problems — flash with a 10A charger connected, use the bypass cable on 2018+ Cummins, and pull the listed fuses on early Duramax. Remember Cummins and 2011–2016 LML cannot be read, EFILive does not work on Ford Powerstroke, and always clear active DTCs before running a reset file.
